Past MeetingsJanuary 2007 The first meeting of 2007 was well attended and our guest speaker was Al Licata of Bernards Township. Al discussed the current property tax situation and encouraged all members to reach out to their elected officials to let their voice be heard. Mayor George Vitureira discussed some of the current issues that the township committee is reviewing. He talked about the communications advisory committee and the financial reporting advisory committee and how those volunteer groups are designed to create transparency in our government so the Long Hill taxpayer can know more about their government. The club discussed some goals for 2007 and the two goals of increased membership and civic awareness were greeted with enthusiasm. The club officers will be putting together some action plans on how to achieve those goals and looks to club members to help make it happen! February 2007 Tom Kean Jr. visited with the club and discussed many of the issues currently on the table in Trenton. Along with property taxes and budget deficits, Senator Kean also discussed the selling of assets and Republican efforts to win back the governor seat and legislature. Asm Eric Munoz was also on hand to answer questions and debate the issues. March 2007 Schools superintendent Art Di Benedetto and Board of Education President Sue Becker were on hand to present the school budget. This April 17th voters will be asked to approve a K-8 school budget that has a 3.5% increase over last years budget. As part of their presentation they discussed how preparing this budget was especially difficult given the rising cost of health care and utilities. The entire budget presentation is available on the district website at www.longhill.org. April 2007 Emergency Services Night was held for the whole community. The Morris County Sheriff and Long Hill First Aid Squad were on hand to meet the public, educate the community, and demonstrate some of their equipment. The Sheriff brought an enormous display for the residents of Long Hill including the mobile communications command unit which gave residents the opportunity to see what the sheriff's capabilities are. Special thanks go out those teams as well as the Long Hill Seniors and Board of Education for providing us with facilities. This was really a terrific event for Long Hill Township! May 2007 Township Committee candidate Mike Mazzucco spoke to the club about his campaign and motivation for public service. He is committed to maintaining the quality of life in Long Hill and the rural character our community has. Working as a CPA brings financial expertise to the table that will also benefit the community and help our township maintain fiscal discipline. Morris County Freeholder Jack Shrier stopped by to say a few words to the club about his re-election and his work on the board of freeholders. Jack was invited to come back and spend more time with the club as the election draws near. The club voted unanimously to donate $250 to the CERT program in town to help close a budget shortfall the program is currently experiencing. The donation will be made during a public meeting of the township committee. June 2007 Mayor Vitureira discussed the administrator position within the town and the opportunity it has presented to restructure the township staff to reduce the cost of government in the township. Plans were made for the upcoming club picnic in July. July 2007 The annual club picnic and family fun day was held on July 28th. Over 75 people came out for the pig roast and everyone had a great time. In addition to a visit by Asm Bramnick and Asm Munoz, Congressman Frelinghuysen stopped by and lead the picnic in a happy birthday song to Doug Campbell who celebrated his 47th birthday that afternoon. See some of the pictures on the photos page courtesy of Tracey Aroneo. September 2007 Morris County Freeholder Jack Schrier and Asm Jon Bramnick stopped by to discuss their re-election campaigns and issues that are affecting the voters of Morris County and NJ. Freeholder Schrier promoted the good work the freeholders have been doing at the county level and encouraged us to continue to support them. Asm Bramnick discussed some of the current political realities in the legislature. His views on how NJ government works and some of the permitted situations with dual office holding, pensions, and part-time assemblymen gave insight into the inherent problems with NJ government. Township Committee member Jerry Aroneo talked about the current issues in town including the Stirling revitalization project, the new sweeper truck purchase, and the planning board discussions around Valley road. October 2007 A small group gathered in October to hear about the Stirling revitalization project efforts from Mayor Vitureria. Additionally a discussion was held about the upcoming election, nominations of officers for 2008, and the December Christmas Party. November 2007 Nominations where held for the 2008 Club officers and township activities were discussed. Plans for the Christmas party were discussed and finalized. Voting for the nominees and the Christmas party will be held on December 20th. December 2007 The annual Christmas party was a huge success with over 60 members and guests enjoying a terrific evening. We were visited by several prominent politicians and the partying went on well into the late hours. The slate of officers was elected and are looking forward to a good 2008!
